Simple Stories That help Us To Be More Successful

We are living in a busy world full of mass information, diversions and pressures – so communicating with our peers, clients and prospects becomes harder and harder.

A great way to get a message across to someone clearly and quickly is by using a short story, anecdote or analogy. This works really well for delivering a message to business owners who are inevitably very busy people and are being bombarded with a ton of white noise.

Over the next few months I will be sharing some short stories (some serious, some humorous) that illustrate behaviour, decision making and attitude that may have a parallel with critical business issues. Experience tells me that the message is far better received using this method than attempting to rationalise an argument or force the issue.

I hope you enjoy some of the stories (these have been gathered over the past few years from a number of sources as well as from my own experience).

The following story illustrates the power of positive thinking, seeing the opportunity as opposed to negative thinking and lazy conclusions.


In the early 1900s a British shoe manufacturer was looking to expand his business and sent his 2 top sales people to Africa to investigate the market and report back.

On their return the first salesman reported back, "There is no potential out there - nobody wears shoes."

The second salesman reported back, "Wow! - fantastic opportunity, the potential is immense - nobody wears shoes."

The story illustrates how a business owner either sees an opportunity and potential or sees a problem and obstacles.

At Icon Business Solutions we have very often engaged with business owners that find it difficult to break out of their well-established, but restrictive mind set and we have to take them through a process to enable them step back and consider the options in a positive and productive manner.

Successful business owners do not dismiss opportunities because the potential is not obvious, they consider what the opportunity can deliver and then make it happen.
